Yes — completely normally, and this is the question travelers ask most. WhatsApp runs over whatever data connection your phone has; it does not care whether that data comes from your home SIM, Wi-Fi or a travel eSIM. Better still: your WhatsApp account stays tied to your existing number, so nobody needs to save a new contact for you.
Your number stays the same
WhatsApp registers your phone NUMBER, not your SIM card. When you land and your travel eSIM provides the data, WhatsApp simply keeps working as you — same account, same chats, same groups. Your home SIM can even have roaming switched off entirely; the number only needs to exist, not to be connected.
Messages, calls and media all run on data
Texts, voice notes, photos, video calls — every WhatsApp feature is data traffic, so it all flows through the travel eSIM. Voice and video calls consume roughly 0.3–1 MB per minute, so even a small data plan carries a lot of conversation.
The one exception: app-call restrictions in some countries
A few countries restrict internet voice/video calling at the network level — the UAE is the best-known example, where WhatsApp calls are blocked by local regulation on ANY connection, including hotel Wi-Fi and every SIM. Messaging still works normally there. This is a country policy, not an eSIM limitation.
Only re-registering needs SMS
The single moment WhatsApp needs your number reachable is a fresh registration or moving to a new phone, because a verification code arrives by SMS or voice call to your HOME number. Do that setup before you fly (or keep the home SIM able to receive one SMS abroad) and you will never notice — day-to-day use over the eSIM needs no SMS at all.
